Obviously, black smoke from your car is not good for the environment as it contains chemicals such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). It is also not good for your pocket because black smoke usually means the fuel is burnt too much inside the engine.
What are the common causes of black smoke from exhaust?
Fuel is getting burnt too much, which means fuel to air
ratio is not good, indicating a clogged air filter or a malfunction in the fuel
injectors. Also, it could be caused by various other factors such as damaged
piston rings, engine deposits and damaged carburetor. Those are more likely to occur
in old cars. But what if your car is new? Of course we cannot rule out the
above possibilities, but probably you might be having an issue with your
sensors in your fuel injection system such as the oxygen sensor (O2 sensor) or the mass airflow
sensor (MAF sensor).
When to worry? What are the limitations?
In most of the countries clearly visible black smoke fails
the emission inspection tests. To be more specific, emission inspection tests
monitor for clearly visible continuous black for a given periods of time say 10
seconds.
How to get rid of black smoke
Here are few tips which might be helpful to get rid of black smoke.
- Clean air filters.
- Get your fuel injectors checked.
- Try adding fuel additives which can help burn fuel efficiently.
- Get your oxygen sensors checked and replace them if necessary.
