How Often Should You Change Engine Oil?

You might have a tag from your last car service reminding you about your next service date. Again in 5000 Km or in 3 months. What is the general rule in the automotive industry?

What is the use of engine oil?

Engine oil lubricates the moving parts of the engine, reducing the wear and tear of the engine. At the same time, oil cools down the engine preventing it from overheating. Therefore, engine oil plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth running of the engine.

What are the factors affecting the lifetime engine oil?

Due to the latest technological advancements of lubricant manufacturing the general rule of the automotive industry is to change engine oil once every 8000 Km. But this might depend on a lot of factors such as,

  1.          Age of your vehicle.
  2.         The way you drive.
  3.         Quality of Engine Oil.

If you are driving an old vehicle your engine might reach elevated temperatures quickly due to the wear and tear of the moving components of the engine as it tends to create more friction. This temperature fluctuation would cause thermal breakdown of the engine oil. Moreover, old engines have a high chance of getting engine oil contaminated by air, unburned oil and rust triggering the oxidation of engine oil and ending its lifetime.

Driving in heavy traffic causes thermal breakdown of engine oil since it is difficult to maintain the engine at a consistent temperature. Also driving with heavy load causes stress on engines reaching higher temperatures which makes engine oil degrade faster.

Does changing oil once every 3 months make sense?

Even if you keep your vehicle idle there is a chance of oil getting contaminated by air or rust. Therefore, it is better to check the condition and quantity of your engine oil from time to time.
